Who doesn't enjoy a dish of comforting hot tasty soup? So many brands to choose from in cartons these days, a wide variation in price and also percentage of ingredients.

I have been sent some vouchers to buy some New Covent Garden Soups and then write up an evaluation. With over 21 varieties available to buy in most supermarkets, I shall be testing six from the range.

Let me start by quoting a few lines from the excellent website that is http://newcoventgardensoup.com/

SOUP INSPIRATION FOR YOU, SINCE 1987
Whatever the occasion, we have a soup for you. We offer the widest range of delicious soups, so there’s always something to look forward to. Crafted with the finest produce, soup still remains a favourite meal in many of our homes. We’ve been making our delicious soup for over 30 years with taste, health and nutrition remaining at the heart of everything we do.

OUR STORY
In 1987, on a cold Saturday afternoon, a young man had been on a particularly treacherous sailing trip. He returned home to his parent’s house - freezing cold, wet and hungry. As it was summer, his mother had made him a salad…but he wanted something warm and tasty, he wanted soup! Why couldn’t you buy ready-made quality, homely soup in the supermarkets? And then his idea was born. The New Covent Garden Soup Company started with a group of like-minded individuals whose first love was real, good honest food and this philosophy remains at the heart of our business almost 30 years later.

For the purpose of my evaluation, I am going to have each soup for a main meal and therefore eat a whole carton each time. The soups are usually sufficient for two people as a starter or light lunch.

MARIS PIPER POTATO AND LEEK

Covent Garden

Maris Piper, Potato & Leek

Covent Garden

Ready to eat with added parsley garnish from my garden

This is a soup that I buy often and must admit that New Covent Garden variety always beats the other contenders in the taste and flavours test! With only 159 calories per serving* and also leeks are counted as1 of your  'Five a Day' veg portions, a good warming tasty healthy soup! 25% potato and 18% leeks is a good ratio and with the added 4% single cream, a definite winner!

CHICKEN AND CHORIZO JUMBALYA

Covent Garden Soup

Chicken & Chorizo Jumbalaya

Covent Garden soup

Ready to serve

Wow, this soup pulls a spicy punch! Only 132 calories per serving* and containing 2 portions of  your Five a Day. The chicken and spicy chorizo along with chillies, herbs, lime juice and rice fluffy rice, make for a delicious soup and certainly filled me up! A really filling dish for lunch and no extras needed such as bread as rice is included. Very good value.

CLASSIC CHICKEN

Classic Chicken

Ready to serve

Who doesn't like chicken soup, especially a warm nourishing chicken soup? My apologies to the vegetarians reading this! Admittedly this variety has more calories than some varieties, but it is still only 207 calories per serving*. Added single cream and white wine make for a really filling and tasty soup.

SKINNY GOAN SPICED CHICKEN

Skinny Goan Spiced Chicken

Ready to serve

I must be honest, I found the whole carton too filling and should only have had half a carton. The lentils tend to overpower the flavours even though the chicken content is 5% and the lentils 3.6%. If you are a lover of lentils, I am sure you will enjoy the soup. It is low in calories at 132 calories per serving* and contains 2 and a half portions of your 'five a day', so is very good in that respect.

CARROT AND BUTTERNUT

Covent Garden soup

Carrot and butternut

Covent Garden soup

Ready to serve

This is a delicious and comforting soup. A delightful change from the usual Carrot and Coriander soup that is widely available. The smoothness and gentle spices come through on the palate. Only 84 kcals per serving* and containing 1 and a half of your 5 a Day, I would happily eat this soup again and again.

SOUP OF THE MONTH CREAMY LEEK AND CHEDDAR

Covent Garden

Soup of the month

Covent Garden

Ready to serve

I saved the soup of the month until last. The flavours of this soup are very pronounced and the leeks and creamy cheese make for a filling soup. The addition of potatoes herbs and some spices make the soup filling. The leeks count towards 1 of your 5 a day. At 131 Kcals per serving*, slightly higher than some of the range, but still well within a good dietary range.

I hope you have enjoyed my evaluation of just some of the super soups the New Covent Garden Soup Company make. Browse through their comprehnsive website for more varieties and with recipes soon to be published, plus cookbooks available to buy on Amazon, you need never be short of ideas for meal times!

*Per serving is half a carton.
