About nine months ago I began looking for unusual gifts online.
My youngest daughter had recently become engaged and as she and her partner are both blind I wanted a gift for them that was tactile. I came across some handmade pebble art pictures , there were lots of them for sale and they varied in price from about £20 up to £150 !!
They all seemed to be in glazed box frames which meant my daughter and fiancé would not be able to feel how the pebbles are arranged.
The next day I scoured the local shops and found a nice heart shaped wooden plaque which would be ideal for my project. I went for a walk down a wooded area and collected various stones , bits of dried twigs, bark and moss I spread out all my "treasure " on a tray and proceeded to arrange some of it .. Hhmm it wasn't as easy as it looked .. However after lots of trial and error and glued together fingers I finally made something I was happy with and it was received very well and went straight up on their wall.
I sent a photo of the plaque to a friend of my mine and she liked it so much that she asked if I would make one for a family member of hers.
This time it would be a mummy, daddy and two children. It was quite hard finding suitably sized pebbles to make the bodies heads and arms and also getting the composition right , I didn't just want to glue a line of pebbles in a row and the glue I used was quick setting so couldn't move them about once they were stuck down. It was quite tricky trying to make sure that the glue couldn't be seen once it was finished as well.
My friend loved the finished work and shared it on her Facebook page and I received a few more orders.
I am a member of a wonderful local choir of which many of them are my Facebook friends and lots of them liked and shared my work. Some of them even collected pebbles , shells and driftwood for me to use. I haven't done much with the shells yet but I'm planning on making some beach themed pictures when the warmer weather arrives.
I went on to make approximately forty pictures during that year and am extremely grateful to everyone who has shared and bought pebble art from me and am looking forward to making some more as I have lots of new ideas for Valentines, Mother's Day, birthdays, anniversaries, weddings etc.
I find it immensely satisfying to think that something I have made is now hanging on someone's wall or sitting on their sideboard and will be putting some new work up on my Facebook page .. The Pebble Lady.
