We're always being told to get out of our armchairs and exercise more for better health and a longer life. There's no doubting the mounting research telling us that's true. According to one recent report, tens of thousands of lives could be saved each year in the UK if people simply walked more.
The Ramblers and Macmillan Cancer Support concluded in their "Walking Works" report that walking could transform people's health by decreasing the odds of heart problems and stroke as well as making a difference in conditions such as type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's and many cancers.
For most of us walking is as simple as slipping on a pair of shoes and opening the front door, but as we age, it's not always as simple as that. Having known and loved an increasing number of ageing relatives and friends, I know that age can impair our circulation, which can make feet and ankles swell. Walking is, of course, great for maintaining and improving circulation, but what if we can't find comfy shoes to walk in because of swollen feet?
If you are one of the thousands of people in the UK who suffer with swollen feet, you might be interested in a mail order company called Cosyfeet that sells shoes with an extra wide fitting. I first bought shoes from them for my own grandparents years ago, but the styles they're making now are for a more fashion conscious consumer.
Their footwear is extra deep, which means it can fit swelling as well as bunions, problem toes and orthotics. Many of their styles are adjustable which is ideal if your feet swell up during the day or if one foot is more swollen than the other. They also make a range of extra roomy socks and hosiery.
