A weekend visit was planned to meet up with friends, where could we stay for one night in Southampton?
Trawling through the internet we found numerous well known hotel chains. But somehow they all lacked character. Then by chance on Trip Advisor we found these 5 star reviews about Heather Gables which were so brilliant, that we decided to book there and then.
The Bed and Breakfast accomodation is situated in Bursledon, a quieter area of Southampton, but with many restaurants and pubs within easy driving distance. This seemed like just the place we were looking for.
Derek had the full English breakfast and it was fit for a king
On arrival we were met by Peter who carried our bags upstairs to a bedroom that was just perfect. A beautiful white bedspread covered a king size bed which looked so comfortable! The bathroom with its enormous white fluffy towels, complementary flannels, shower gel, shampoo, soap and moisturiser.
Me standing by one of Rita's many wonderful embroidery pictures
What a talent this lady has! The various pictures of different designs are hung on the walls throughout the house.
View from our bedroom window
It made a change not to have curtains and French Doors somehow seemed the right idea for this gorgeous bedroom.
Tea and coffee making facilities all lovingly laid out on a white tablecloth with well known chocolate bars, not the usual digestive or hobnob biscuits! Wicker chairs in the bedroom and bathroom somehow completed the decoration.
The following morning, we eagerly went down to the open plan dining room to sample the enormous breakfast choice. We were met by Rita who was so warm, welcoming and homely.
Lovely wall unit displaying china and delightful ornaments
Derek had the full English breakfast and it was fit for a king, all freshly cooked. Toast was made when it was the right time to be consumed, not like most establishments, who bring it at the start of the meal. I had cereals, fresh fruit salad and scrambled eggs and bacon, perfectly cooked, again, to order. In the summer the guests can eat on the terrace.
Patio where breakfast is taken on a warm day
One could almost be stopping in a mediterranean area. The warmth of the hosts beats any guest house I have stayed in!
Heather Gables is certainly worthy of its four stars. I would have no hesitation in recommending it and we will be staying here next time we are in this area!
